Maite-Maitri
Lama Maitri (Maite Castellano)
Maite’s passion for Tibetan Buddhism blossomed at a young age, inspiring her to dedicate her life to the study and practice of the Dharma. Encouraged by her teachers, Lama Djinpa Tarchin and Khenpo Tsultrim Gyatso Rinpoche, and motivated by a wish to engage directly with the teachings in Tibetan, she enrolled in a two-year intensive Tibetan language program at Thosamling in Dharamsala (2006–2007). There, she immersed herself in Colloquial and Classical Tibetan, Buddhist philosophy, and Tibetan debate, further enriching her studies through the Winter Philosophy Program at Pullahari Monastery in Nepal (2008).
After these studies, she returned to Spain, where she received the complete cycle of Shangpa Kagyu empowerments from Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche and entered retreat at Dag Shang Kagyu—first completing the six-month preliminary retreat and then the traditional three-year retreat. During this time, she also served as interpreter and translator. At the request of the retreat master, Lama Drubgyu, and with the encouragement of Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche, she committed to serve as the translator for the second three-year retreat, continuing in this role for another four years.
Wishing to further consolidate her knowledge of Buddhist philosophy and deepen her command of Tibetan, Maite later pursued formal academic studies at Rangjung Yeshe Institute (RYI), where she earned both her BA (Buddhist Studies & Himalayan Languages) and MA (Translation, Textual Interpretation & Philology) degrees.
Guided by her recognition of the Dharma’s profound value, Lama Maitri is committed to its authentic flourishing in the West. She believes that transmitting these teachings requires clarity, precision, and fidelity to their essence, grounded in deep understanding and effective communication. This vision continues to fuel her lifelong commitment to study and practice. Her aspiration is that the wisdom of Buddhism may take root in the West, bringing genuine benefit to all who encounter it.
